Charmaine Anthony

CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP

I’m a passionate animal advocate, butterfly migration hobbyist, and gardener. I started working with dogs in 2001. Since then, I’ve fostered over 60 dogs, achieved dozens of certifications, spent five years in a rewarding role in the behavior department at Chicago’s Anti-Cruelty Society. Continued education fosters my nerdy approach to animal behavioral science. By applying the principles of training I was able to achieve multiple NACSW titles with not only a labrador but a Chihuahua. Both different breeds, the power of the cue, consistency and making playing the game of finding odor the most reinforcing choice for both dogs earned us many ribbons and titles in the sport.

My approach to dog training

I’ve offered in-home dog training with a focus on behavioral science since 2009. I attended my first educational seminar in 2004 while still a volunteer in our local animal control. That focus and push to always learn about canine behavior means helping my clients reframe how they think about their dogs. (They’re a completely different species, after all.) Behaviors that seem totally normal to dogs—mouthing, jumping, digging, vocalizing, chewing, and counter surfing—can be frustrating to humans. With that in mind, it’s easy to label our dogs using human standards—maybe they seem “stubborn,” “guilty,” or even “spiteful.” In these cases, I help clients realize that dogs are really good at being dogs and are trying to fit into our lifestyles.

I’ve facilitated countless behavior assessments and modification programs to help dogs and their people live healthy, happy lives. I’m committed to establishing a relationship of mutual trust between my clients and their dogs.
